Why preserving traditional Zagreb crafts is important

Autor ZagrebCrafts / Tagovi

The craftsmen and their work are the best ones to tell about the importance of preserving tradition and handicraft. We trust you’ve got to know them through Zagreb Crafts, a platform aimed at showcasing and active following of Zagreb’s traditional crafts. They include florists, glaziers, curriers, shoemakers, combmakers, jewellers and even hatmakers. Most of them have been in this line of work since they were children and they’re going to great lengths to preserve quality and handicraft.

We all have a lot to learn

Every craftsman will approach you on a completely individual basis, which is something you can’t get at classic stores selling shoes or clothes. While talking to them, you’ll find out quite a lot about the process of making a seemingly usual shoe our closets are packed with. Maximal adjustment to the customer is the result of a custom-made order, which is what most craftsmen point out as being one of the main advantages of small crafts.
Valuable heritage for posterity

The workshops of combmaker Antun Penezić and fountain pen restorer Vlasta Keranović are the only ones of their kind in Europe. Vlasta Karanović’s Peroklinika is the oldest fountain pen repair shop in Europe. With a tradition spanning 70 years, she plans on opening a fountain pen museum. Antun Penezić is the proud owner of a recognition for restoring forgotten crafts. The fact that he is the only combmaker in Europe just gives you an additional reason to get to know this forgotten profession better.

Quality before quantity

Every single of these craftsmen places emphasis on quality, which is why prices don’t change. With countless products that all look the same, quality is what makes the products of Zagreb’s craftsmen so special. The use the very best material and have not succumbed to mass production, which is why their customers have been coming back for years.

One of a kind

A craftsman’s personalised approach results in a unique product. When it comes to footwear, Anita Štulec from salon A Shoo will take your measurements, suggest appropriate footwear and make a shoe according to what you have in mind.

Some craftsmen, such as jeweller Janko Fukač in Zagreb’s Oktogon only offer custom-made products. You can also get your hands on original pieces at Dora Rubić’s fashion salon Dora where every single coat and raincoat is a one-of-a-kind product.
