The project of the Zagreb Chamber of Crafts and the Zagreb Crafts Association received the continuation of the story in the form of launching the first shop imagined as a place that will offer unique handicrafts of Zagreb’s craftsmen and craftsmen of Zagreb County to a wider audience.
“A kind of continuation of the successful Zagreb Crafts digital platform through which more than one hundred craftsmen offer their handicrafts, is a logical sequence of events in order to show the local audience, as well as numerous tourists, what did the hands of those craftsmen make.”
Zagreb Chamber of Crafts
With the common goal of promoting and popularising traditional and artistic crafts, the Zagreb Crafts shop is located in the heart of Zagreb, in an attractive passageway at Ilica 49, where besides the shop itself, several local traditional crafts have been operating successfully for many years. The Zagreb Crafts shop is designed as an exhibition and sales space for unique design handicrafts made by craftsmen in the cities of Zagreb and Zagreb County. The miniatures displayed are of high aesthetic and creative value.
“With the group promotion of our craftsmen, we want to encourage the development and sale of craft products as souvenirs of the City of Zagreb and other craft products, to increase the interest of tourists and other residents for unique and rare craft products. With the promotion we want to popularise traditional and artistic crafts as well as crafts in general ”- said the representatives of the Zagreb Chamber of Craft.
Carefully selected products of craftsmen with great potential for sale to foreign visitors of Zagreb in order to preserve the crafts that are threatened with disappearance have been chosen. The shop currently offers art jewellery, unique dresses, unique bags and wallets, souvenirs with Zagreb motifs, various floral decorations, hand-sewn notebooks and a variety of handmade ornaments. More than thirty artisans exhibit their products in the shop, and from the Zagreb Chamber of Trades and Crafts they point out that they plan to expand the space for the future, in accordance with the great interest of craftsmen.
Academic painter and graphic designer Olivera Cavrić at the Zagreb Crafts Shop exhibits paintings, souvenirs and Happy Zagreb T-shirts that follow modern trends and aesthetics of souvenir production. “Colourful drops, intuitively applied through the recognisable motifs of Zagreb and Croatia, represent joy, togetherness and love. That kind of emotion is exactly what people recognise and what bind them to where they were”, Olivera said by expressing her happiness because of opening that shop as a place that rounds out the Zagreb craft story. Compare Olivera’s work with the products of the crafts of Lapidarium, Tomica Marica, Talan, and Klupica.
Rafaela Petrinić from the flower shop Poppy has decided to offer decorative floral handicrafts in her shop, so she has created hand-painted ostrich eggs in collaboration with the academic painter Biserka Zlatar.
“I have designed a handmade candlestick made of wire and artificial flowers that takes over thirty hours of work, then floral weddings and small mugs that function as souvenirs”, she said while stating that she has been extremely happy to be a part of the Zagreb Crafts story. In addition to Poppy, you will also find crafts such as Koogle, Ethnodolls, and Flower Shop Tea in Zagreb Crafts Shop, whose artwork seems to be in line with one another.
‘Ahat’ craft, Art HD, IRKI and ATA4ART, as well as Petra Candle are some of the newly established artisans you can find at the Zagreb Crafts Shop, and in the showroom you will also find products from some of the now legendary crafts such as The feather clinic of Penkala, Vuk Leather, Klanac, and Sounds Mini, as well as more specialised craftsmen such as Metaloplast, Zlatarna Popek, and M&B.
The opening of the Zagreb Crafts shop once again established the importance of nurturing manual work as part of Zagreb tradition, and with the growing public interest in craftsmanship, the newly opened shop is well on its way to position Zagreb as a centre of craft events.
