Currently, her main focus and interest is the traditional Dubrovnik ring of filigree craftsmanship, which is rarely seen today. “It’s rare that people make it today, and it’s really hard to get it done,” she says, adding that the challenge is even greater and the replica of the ring even dearer. “I have had fun replicating my Dubrovnik ring since the beginning of the year, as everything is handmade, the work itself is extremely demanding, which implies maximum concentration“, notes Sanja.

Inspired by tradition, she makes variations of earrings and pendants modelled by the look of the Dubrovnik ring, and believes that the Croatian president has herself contributed to the popularization of this type of jewellery by wearing traditional jewellery. She sees herself as a big playful kid who loves to explore and is constantly striving to invest more in knowledge.

“I graduated the design of contemporary jewellery at the Zagreb Open University, and I volunteered with numerous Zagreb jewellers to learn the craft”, adds Sanja, who sells her jewellery in galleries throughout Zagreb and Dalmatia, and mostly through order. She has exhibited jewellery at specialist fairs from Zagreb through Mostar to Slovenia, and some of her handicrafts can be viewed at the Schmizla Shop Facebook page.

She also participated in the exhibition “From Skills to Art” as part of the Public Open University in Zagreb in 2018, and she hopes for the future that Croatian traditional jewellery will find their place on the world map.
